Janské Lázně, 18. 12. 2017 / The Janské Lázně Symposium is the largest rehabilitation symposium in the Czech Republic. Its 12th year will take place from 11 to 13 January 2018 and will bring together more than a hundred participants from medical and non-medical professions from the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, as well as about three dozen participants directly from the organizer, Janské Lázně. The expert guarantor of the symposium is Prof. PaedDr. Pavel Kolář, Ph.D. – Czech physiotherapist, specializing primarily in movement pathology in children. He is known for his care of top Czech athletes.
The professional symposium was created thirteen years ago as a children's event. "First we focused on cerebral palsy. Gradually, other years came, and because they were successful, we expanded them to include other topics," recalls the director of medical care and chief physician of the Vesna Janské Lázně Children's Hospital, MUDr. Vasil Janko. He added that the program is traditionally divided into Adult Treatment and Pediatric Days and consists of a neurological and orthopedic part.
In the "adult" part, the Symposium 2018 will focus, for example, on progressive chronic neurogenic diseases. These are diseases such as Charcot – Marie – Tooth (CMT), multiple sclerosis and others. "The Pediatric Days program includes lectures on pediatric orthopedics, neurology, and rehabilitation, as well as on fields that are close to us. This year, speech therapy will have a big say," Vasil Janko explained.
Pediatric days will also focus on swallowing disorders in children
In previous years, at Pediatric Days, experts focused on the upper limb - the shoulder to the elbow, including various injuries. "This year, we are moving from the upper limb to the lower limb in children and will start in the hip and femur area. So the orthopedic circuit in the children's section will be dedicated to diseases and injuries in the hip and femur area," Vasil Janko stated.
In the neurological section, a big topic is dysphagia, which is a swallowing disorder that often occurs in older adults after a stroke (cerebral stroke). "However, the second largest group of people affected by dysphagia are children with cerebral palsy, congenital malformations of the oral cavity, neurological diseases, and diseases caused by injury, burns, or corrosives," explained the chief physician. He specified that when the injury affects, for example, the central nervous system and the brain is damaged, the nerve pathways that ensure the act of swallowing are disrupted. "In our country, we tend to see neurological cases of swallowing disorders," added.
The Children's Symposium has a twelve-year tradition and, with lecturers from all over the country, it clearly has its place in the Czech Republic. "We are trying to expand it to include experts from Slovakia. In the past, we had experts from Graz, and even world-renowned prosthetist Nancy Hilton, who means a lot in this field, lectured here," Vasil Janko recalled.
The third part of the Pediatric Days is composed of various fields. It will be lectured by Prof. Petr Pohunek on bronchoscopy in children and MUDr. Mária Praženicová from Banská Bystrica on glaucoma as a part of some neurodegenerative diseases. There will also be several lectures by psychologists and a special educator, and lectures by authors from other spas on their methods of treatment. "This is how we try to "broaden our horizons" to develop our education in other areas, in addition to rehabilitation, neurology and orthopedics," Vasil Janko explained.
Cooperation between experts and major institutions and comparison of treatment results are important.
Participation in the symposium has several meanings for all participants. Most importantly, they will learn new things from the fields in which they work. Every year there is something new and it is important that experts leave new knowledge and ideas at the symposium that are beneficial to the fields discussed, and that they continue to develop cooperation between the individual workplaces that they represent at the symposium. They will learn about the latest developments directly at the State Spa in Janské Lázně and will be able to try out new devices that the Vesna Children's Hospital purchased a year ago.
"Last but not least, it is important to compare patient treatment approaches and outcomes based on the same methodology so that they are comparable. This is the so-called Evidence-Based Medicine, which is a systematic approach to treatment, combining the best available scientific evidence with the clinical experience of the physician and the preferences and needs of the patient being treated," concluded by the head of the Vesna Children's Hospital and the director of medical care at the Janské Lázně Health Resort Vasil Janko.
