SAFARI DREAM
Director Ivo Pavelek filmed a feature-length documentary Safari dream, which tells the extraordinary life story of the founder of Safari in Dvůr Králové Ing. Josef Vágner, the legendary director of the local zoo.
The film took seven years to make and charts the journey from a childhood dream to its fulfillment – to building a unique safari and a courageous effort to save the gene pool of African animals. Josef Vágner was a visionary, adventurer and a great storyteller. He was able to overcome the distrust of the regime at the time and was the first in the world to develop a way to safely prepare wild animals for long transports to Europe.
However, his life also brought difficult moments - for example, the tragic shooting of a rare herd of giraffes and antelopes in 1975 on the orders of the state administration. Nevertheless, he never gave up and continued his work and telling stories of Africa, which attracted full audiences throughout Czechoslovakia.
The documentary commemorates not only his legacy for the world of zoology and nature conservation, but also the personality of a man with extraordinary courage, vision, and natural authority.
